The ceramic industry had almost fallen into desuetude, when in 1895 an increase in the duties from 1-2 cent to 2 1-2 cents per lb. on imported products permitted it to progress rapidly, and 5 factories of São Paulo, one in Rio Grande do Sul and one in Minas Geraes (Caeté), all producing first-class material. Argill and kaolin deposits of excellent quality are abundant in all the states, so that this industry has in it the possibilities for continued prosperity. (...)"
